The Mayegun Vanguard, a political support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged party leaders to endorse former lawmaker, Rotimi Makinde, as the party’s candidate for the Ife Federal Constituency, citing the need for equity, loyalty, and grassroots strength ahead of upcoming legislative elections.
In a formal request to APC stakeholders, the Mayegun Vanguard raised concerns over what it described as an imbalance in the distribution of key political positions within the constituency. According to the group, several high-profile roles — including the deputy governorship slot, an ambassadorial appointment, and the incumbent representative seeking a third term — are concentrated in Ilare Ward of Ife Central Local Government Area.
The group warned that such concentration could alienate voters in other parts of the constituency, particularly Ife East, and potentially weaken the party’s electoral prospects if not urgently addressed.
Making a case for geographical balance, the Mayegun Vanguard noted that Makinde hails from Ife East and maintains strong political roots in the area. It argued that presenting a candidate from Ife East would not only ensure inclusivity but also strengthen the APC’s position against opposition forces, especially in areas where competition is expected to be intense.
The group also highlighted Makinde’s political experience and electoral value, describing him as a tested mobiliser with a track record of delivering results. It referenced his role in previous elections, including the 2022 governorship poll, where he was credited with sustaining party support in key areas despite challenges in some strongholds.
Beyond his electoral contributions, the Mayegun Vanguard emphasized Makinde’s long-standing loyalty to the APC, noting that he has remained committed to the party for over two decades. This, it said, sets him apart from recent defectors and newcomers, positioning him as a candidate with deep institutional knowledge and credibility within party ranks.
The statement further underscored his grassroots appeal, describing him as a politician with enduring ties to constituents and a strong relationship with party stakeholders across the constituency.
In conclusion, the Mayegun Vanguard called on APC leadership to prioritize fairness, unity, and strategic balance in determining the party’s candidate, expressing confidence that Makinde’s candidacy offers the pedigree and structure needed to secure victory in the Ife Federal Constituency.
The appeal was signed by Pastor Lazarus Tobi Abuah on behalf of the Mayegun Vanguard.
