The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the cancellation of 485 land titles across Abuja after an official verification exercise confirmed that the documents were fake or failed authenticity checks.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) disclosed the decision in a public notice issued by its Departments of Land Administration and the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS), stating that the affected applications had been removed from the territory’s land regularisation database.
According to the notice, the cancelled titles were largely drawn from Area Council allocations submitted for validation but found to be fraudulent or irregular. Authorities said the move forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at sanitising Abuja’s land administration system and eliminating forged documents and double allocations that have long plagued the territory.
The affected locations span multiple satellite districts. In Bwari Area Council, layouts impacted include Ushafa Village Expansion Scheme, Ushafa Extension and Dawaki Extension 1. Within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the cancellations cover Kurudu-Jikwoyi Relocation, Kurudu Commercial, Karu Village Extension, Nyanya Phase IV Extension, Jikwoyi Residential, Sabon Lugbe and Lugbe I Extension, while Kuchiyako One layout in Kuje Area Council is also listed.
Under Nigerian law, all land in the FCT is vested in the Federal Government, and titles such as Certificates of Occupancy must be issued under the authority of the FCT Minister and processed through AGIS. The administration said the latest cancellations specifically target forgery and lack of genuineness rather than non-payment of statutory fees or undeveloped plots.
The action follows a broader land regularisation drive launched by the FCTA, which previously revealed that only about 8,287 of over 261,000 Area Council land documents submitted between 2006 and 2023 had been screened, highlighting the scale of irregular allocations in Abuja’s satellite towns.
Officials say further batches of cancellations may follow as verification continues, warning holders of questionable land papers to regularise their documents or risk losing their claims.
