Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that the people of Rivers State do not require the support of a sitting governor to mobilise and win elections, including for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.
Wike made the assertion during a political gathering in Port Harcourt, where he addressed party supporters and political stakeholders. He argued that electoral success is driven by grassroots mobilisation and strong political structures rather than dependence on the office of a governor.
According to the FCT minister, Rivers State has enough political leaders, lawmakers, local government actors and party faithful who can effectively organise and deliver votes without any directive from the state’s chief executive. He maintained that genuine political support is proven through concrete action, not public pronouncements.
Wike also commended pro-Tinubu support groups operating across Rivers State, noting that they have established functional structures in all local government areas of the state. He expressed confidence that these networks are capable of sustaining mobilisation efforts ahead of the next general election.
The remarks are widely interpreted as a veiled reference to the ongoing political tension between Wike and the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, which has continued to shape political discourse in the state since the end of Wike’s tenure as governor.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum, Wike’s comments highlight the deepening political divisions in Rivers State and signal his continued influence in the state’s political calculations, despite no longer holding elected office there.
