Moves by former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election have been put on hold amid uncertainty surrounding the party’s presidential ticket.
Political sources disclosed that discussions between Kwankwaso’s camp and leaders of the African Democratic Congress were linked to a broader opposition realignment that would likely feature former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as the party’s presidential flagbearer. However, doubts over whether Obi would ultimately secure the ADC ticket have slowed down the proposed defection.
According to insiders, Kwankwaso and his allies are unwilling to commit to a new political platform without clear guarantees on the party’s presidential zoning and nomination process. The lack of certainty has reportedly raised concerns about political leverage and long-term strategy, especially given Kwankwaso’s influence in parts of the North.
