The 2026 Osun State governorship election is shaping up to be a thrilling contest, with Bola Oyebamiji (APC), Demola Adeleke (Accord Party), and Najim Salam (ADC) as frontrunners. Oyebamiji, a former Finance Commissioner, has emerged as the APC candidate, pledging to focus on economic opportunities, infrastructure, and sustainable development. He has to paddle the canoe so well to accelerate settlement of issues arising from his emergence, particularly among party loyalists and supporters. The delicate balance of power dynamics, coupled with the need to unite the party, makes his deputy governor choice crucial.
Adeleke, the incumbent governor, has defected to the Accord Party and vows to defeat Oyebamiji, citing his achievements in healthcare, education, and workers' welfare. However, critics argue that his administration has been marred by controversy, including allegations of poor governance and lopsided appointments. Adeleke's choice of deputy governor will be pivotal in addressing these criticisms and convincing voters that his government is committed to inclusivity.
The choice of deputy governor will be crucial in determining the winning formula for each candidate. Salam, the ADC candidate, is seen as a strong contender, having won the party's primary election with 520 votes. He needs a weighty politician who can bring block votes, aside from the sentiment surrounding his leader, Rauf Aregbesola. Salam's running mate could be the key to unlocking support from undecided voters and solidifying his campaign.
The election is expected to be a battle of ideologies, with Oyebamiji promising a new governance model and Adeleke touting his achievements. The Accord Party has accused the APC of anti-people policies, while the APC has criticized Adeleke's administration for poor governance. As the campaigns heat up, voters will be looking for clarity on the candidates' vision for Osun State's future.
