Islamic commentator Hussaini Yusuf Mabera has criticised popular cleric Pastor Abel Damina over remarks allegedly made against Islam during a recent public programme.
Mabera’s criticism followed a discussion in which Pastor Damina reportedly hosted evangelist Mamman Mamman, said to be from the Niger Republic, to speak on Islamic beliefs. According to Mabera, the discussion was flawed and based on what he described as ignorance and misrepresentation of core Islamic teachings, particularly concerning the Qur’an and the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
He accused Pastor Damina of engaging in what he termed false and unproductive evangelism, arguing that the questions raised during the session were not rooted in sound scholarship and were allegedly aimed at ridiculing Islam rather than promoting genuine interfaith understanding.
Mabera further claimed that the cleric’s recent posture may be influenced by concerns over the growing influence of Islam and declining confidence among members of his congregation. He alleged that some followers have distanced themselves from the ministry, although such claims could not be independently verified.
The Islamic commentator also criticised what he described as a growing trend of entertainment-driven preaching, warning that it risks misleading followers and undermining sincere spiritual guidance.
He noted that Muslim scholars have begun issuing scholarly responses to what they view as inaccurate or out-of-context references to Islamic texts, stressing that such engagements help clarify misconceptions and strengthen understanding of Islam.
Mabera called on religious leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility in public discourse, urging a commitment to truth, respect, and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria’s religiously diverse society.
