Fresh controversy has erupted in Abuja following claims that the Maitama residence of Chief Timipre Sylva, immediate past Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and former Governor of Bayelsa State, has been placed under heavy security presence, leaving his children and other family members allegedly traumatized.
The alarm was raised by Sylva’s media aide, Julius Bokoru, who described the development as a “disturbing siege” by security operatives that has persisted despite the absence of the former minister from the country at the time of the reported operation. According to the aide, armed operatives stormed the residence and have continued to maintain an intimidating presence, creating fear and anxiety among those living in the house, particularly children.
Beyond the reported siege, Sylva’s camp alleges that at least four of his aides and staff — including a driver and an escort driver — were arrested and remain in detention, with their families kept in the dark about the reasons for their continued incarceration. The aide claims the detainees have not been formally charged or granted access to legal counsel, raising concerns about due process and humane treatment.
The development is believed to be linked to a wider security probe reportedly involving allegations of a foiled coup plot, which has led to the arrest of several military officers by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). While intelligence sources have hinted at alleged civilian links to the investigation, the Nigerian military has publicly played down reports of a coup attempt, describing the arrests of officers as part of routine internal disciplinary measures.
Despite this official position, security agencies are yet to clearly explain the raid on Sylva’s home or the detention of his aides. No formal charges have been announced against the former minister, his family, or his staff. Sylva’s media aide insists the former governor has no involvement in any anti-democratic plot, describing the situation as politically motivated and designed to intimidate.
Adding another layer to the controversy, Sylva is said to have formally expressed his willingness to cooperate with any legitimate investigation by relevant authorities, subject to health and procedural considerations. Yet, despite this assurance, his aides allegedly remain in custody and the security presence around his residence continues.
Human rights observers and legal analysts warn that the alleged siege of a private residence and the detention of aides without clear charges raise serious constitutional and civil liberties questions. They argue that even where national security concerns exist, transparency and adherence to the rule of law are essential to maintain public trust.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies involved have not issued an official statement specifically addressing the Maitama residence, the condition of the detained aides, or the legal basis for the operation. The silence has fueled speculation and heightened public interest, especially given Sylva’s prominence in national politics.
For now, the situation remains tense, with Sylva’s camp calling for “reason, humanity and due process,” while Nigerians await clarity on whether the development is a legitimate security operation or another high-profile political drama unfolding behind closed doors.
