In a moment that electrified the cultural landscape of Northern Nigeria, renowned calligrapher Zainab Musa Sambo stepped into the historic palace of Kano and unveiled a breathtaking piece of art that left even the revered Emir, His Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, visibly moved. The presentation—rich, regal, and steeped in centuries-old tradition—instantly became the talk of the ancient city.
The artwork, an exquisitely crafted calligraphy piece shaped like the Emir’s iconic turban, shimmered with bold, peacock-inspired hues that symbolized royal majesty, timeless wisdom, and the spiritual depth of Islamic culture. From its intricate strokes to its fluid composition, the piece fused classical Islamic calligraphy with a daring contemporary touch, embodying both the legacy and evolution of Arewa art.
Sambo explained that every line and curve was deliberately sculpted to represent the dignity of the Kano Emirate—an institution woven into the very fabric of Northern identity.
“I wanted to capture not just the leadership of His Highness, but the soul of the Hausa people,” she said. “Calligraphy has always been central to our Islamic tradition, a sacred form of beauty. This piece reflects that heritage.”
Her inspiration, she added, grew from the Emir’s enduring reputation as a reformist, scholar, and royal figurehead whose influence stretches far beyond the palace walls.
The Emir, clearly impressed, described the creation as nothing short of a cultural treasure.
“This is a true masterpiece,” he said, admiring the work with a warm smile. “It reflects the richness of our history, our faith, and the beauty of Islamic art. I am deeply honored.”
The event, held in the palace courtyard, drew an esteemed gathering—traditional title holders, scholars, art lovers, and young creatives who look to Sambo as one of the rising stars reshaping Arewa’s artistic future. The crowd erupted in applause as the masterpiece was unveiled, many calling it “a revival of Northern artistic pride”.
