Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN, on Saturday joined dignitaries, academics, and students at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, to commemorate the institution’s 17th Founder’s Day — a ceremony that celebrated the university’s progress and honoured its founder, Atiku Abubakar, GCON.
The event, held at the Lamido Aliyu Mustafa Commencement Hall, highlighted AUN’s steady rise as Africa’s leading Development University. Malami, alongside members of the Governing Council, senior administrators, faculty, and invited guests, participated in a ceremony that acknowledged AUN’s contributions to educational innovation and national development.
The keynote address was delivered by Ambassador Muhammadou M.O. Kah, The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva. He underscored the critical importance of education in addressing Africa’s development challenges and urged universities like AUN to continue shaping leaders capable of driving sustainable growth across the continent.
The ceremony also featured honour awards for long-serving staff and faculty who have dedicated 15 years or more to the institution. Outstanding students and alumni were similarly recognised for their academic and leadership achievements. The Founder’s Day followed Thursday’s International Day celebrations where AUN’s multicultural community showcased diverse global cultures.
AUN President, Dr. DeWayne P. Frazier, reaffirmed the university’s mission to deliver an American-style liberal arts education rooted in innovation, development, and global competitiveness. He described the Founder’s Day as a moment to reflect on AUN’s progress while renewing commitment to its future aspirations.
