President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in the Nigerian Armed Forces, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Christopher Gwabin Musa.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, who said the appointments take immediate effect. The move, according to the statement, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s national security architecture and enhance operational efficiency within the military.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made changes in the hierarchy of the Service Chiefs in furtherance of the Federal Government’s efforts to fortify national security,” the statement read. It also conveyed the President’s appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other affected officers for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”
Although no specific reasons were given for the change, the development comes amid reports of an alleged coup plot involving some senior military officers — a matter that has generated national attention in recent weeks.
Security observers interpret the reshuffle as part of Tinubu’s broader strategy to consolidate confidence and discipline within the military, especially as the government intensifies its fight against insurgency, banditry, and other internal security threats.
General Olufemi Oluyede, known for his professional depth and field experience, is expected to inject new energy and direction into the nation’s defence operations.
