The House of Representatives has expressed serious concern over the growing presence of unidentified security operatives at checkpoints across the South-East and South-South regions, describing the development as a national security risk and a threat to public trust.
During Thursday’s plenary session, lawmakers lamented that many of these operatives, reportedly dressed in plain clothes or unmarked uniforms, have been linked to rising cases of extortion, harassment, and intimidation of road users. They noted that the situation not only undermines the credibility of security agencies but also heightens public anxiety in regions already grappling with insecurity and economic hardship.
In a motion adopted on the floor of the House, members urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, to immediately ensure that all personnel manning checkpoints across the country are fully kitted in official uniforms bearing visible names and ranks.
Lawmakers further stressed the need for transparency and accountability in field operations, insisting that uniform identification is a fundamental requirement for public confidence in security institutions.
They called for stronger inter-agency coordination to eliminate impostors and rogue elements who exploit the system for personal gain. According to the House, the unchecked presence of unidentified operatives on highways poses a grave risk to national security and citizens’ safety, urging swift executive action to restore order and discipline at all checkpoints.
The motion was referred to the Committees on Police Affairs and Interior for further legislative oversight and recommendations.
