In a move that has drawn widespread attention across Nigeria’s political landscape, Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki, the lawmaker representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, has announced that he will not seek re-election into the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections.
Dasuki, who made the announcement over the weekend, said his decision was born out of a deep conviction to give younger Nigerians the opportunity to contribute to nation-building through active political participation.
“I believe that leadership should be a relay — not a lifetime entitlement. Having served my people diligently, I think it’s time to allow new faces, especially the younger generation, to step up and bring fresh ideas to governance,” Dasuki said.
The federal lawmaker, who has been in public service since 2011, expressed gratitude to his constituents, political associates, and his long-time mentor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, for their consistent support throughout his political journey. He stressed that his decision was not out of fatigue but rather a deliberate act of sacrifice for the next generation.
Dasuki, who currently serves as the Interim Chairman of the Future Is Now Project — a youth-inclusion initiative launched in Abuja on October 1, 2025 — reiterated that his decision aligns with the core objective of the project, which advocates that at least 70 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives be occupied by Nigerians under the age of 40 by 2027.
“Even though I still consider myself youthful in spirit and energy, I have crossed the age threshold that our movement defines as ‘young.’ Therefore, I must lead by example by making room for those coming behind,” he added.
The Future Is Now Project has since gained traction among young Nigerians, with growing calls for political parties to adopt internal reforms that prioritize youth representation in elective positions.
Observers have described Dasuki’s decision as rare in Nigerian politics, where incumbents often seek repeated re-election. Many political analysts have also lauded his action as a demonstration of integrity and a call for generational renewal within the country’s democratic system.
Constituents in Kebbe and Tambuwal are expected to begin consultations in the coming months as the search for Dasuki’s successor intensifies ahead of the 2027 polls. Party insiders suggest that several youth leaders and political aides from the zone are already positioning themselves for the race, signaling an impending reshuffle of political power in the area.
While stepping away from elective office, Hon. Dasuki affirmed his continued commitment to mentoring young leaders and advocating for inclusive governance, transparency, and youth empowerment across the nation.
“My decision is not an exit from service but a transition to a higher calling — one that focuses on grooming the next generation of leaders for a better Nigeria,” he concluded.
