The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Secretariat in Abejukolo, headquarters of Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, was attacked and vandalised on Saturday night by hoodlums suspected to be political thugs.
Confirming the incident, the Omala LGA Chairman of ADC, Odaudu Ojonimi Friday, said the attackers forcefully broke into the premises, destroying property, including chairs, tables, official documents, and party flags. He described the invasion as “a direct attack on democracy, peace, and the values our party represents,” noting that the act was not only criminal but politically motivated.
Ojonimi, while urging party members and supporters to remain calm, cautioned against any retaliatory action, stressing that ADC would continue to uphold democratic principles despite the provocation. He called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made, and efforts to get the reaction of the Kogi State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, did not respond to calls or messages.
The attack on the ADC Secretariat comes against the backdrop of rising political tensions in Kogi State, where party rivalry has often been marred by allegations of thuggery and intimidation. Observers fear that such acts, if left unchecked, could undermine democracy at the grassroots and fuel insecurity in already fragile communities like Omala.
The ADC leadership has appealed to both state and federal authorities to ensure that political parties are allowed to operate without harassment, warning that failure to curb such excesses may further heat up the polity in the state.
