The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding immediate sanctions against politicians and political parties engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a letter signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP accused INEC of “condoning illegality” by allowing early campaigns to thrive unchecked. The group expressed concern that the continued display of campaign posters, billboards, and political jingles across the country poses a grave threat to democratic order.
According to SERAP, premature campaigns not only drain scarce public resources but also distract elected officials from governance, erode electoral fairness, and give undue advantage to wealthy candidates over others. The group argued that such practices weaken public trust in Nigeria’s democracy and set a dangerous precedent ahead of the crucial 2027 polls.
“INEC must exercise its constitutional powers to withdraw illegal campaign materials and apply sanctions on violators. Anything short of decisive action will compromise electoral integrity,” SERAP warned.
The rights group further threatened to take legal action should INEC fail to comply within the stipulated seven days. SERAP emphasized that Nigerians expect the electoral body to demonstrate impartiality, safeguard the rule of law, and protect the credibility of the electoral process.
INEC is yet to respond to SERAP’s demands, but political observers say the call comes at a time when tensions are already rising within major political parties as aspirants jostle for relevance ahead of 2027.
