Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday, September 8, 2025, visited former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), at his Abuja residence, where Malami openly accused All Progressives Congress (APC)-sponsored thugs of orchestrating the violent attack on his convoy in Kebbi State.
Malami described Atiku’s visit as a gesture of solidarity and support at a time when the opposition is under siege.
“Today, I had the honor of receiving Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at my residence. His visit was a gesture of solidarity as I continue to grapple with the aftermath of the violent attack orchestrated by APC-sponsored thugs in Kebbi State,” Malami declared.
The former minister condemned the rising wave of political violence, stressing that democracy must never be reduced to intimidation and bloodshed.
“The events in Kebbi State serve as a stark warning against the politicization of violence and the deliberate attempt to undermine democratic institutions for partisan advantage. Such acts must be unequivocally condemned and addressed through the law,” he said.
Malami also linked the assault to a broader pattern of attacks on opposition leaders.
“Only a few days earlier, thugs believed to be working for the ruling party violently stormed an ADC coalition meeting in Kaduna led by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. Attendees, including senior party leaders, were assaulted while vehicles were vandalized, even as security agencies looked on,” he noted.
He further cited the disruption of a rally in Lagos where former Labour Party governorship candidate
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was attacked.
“The event, which was to feature respected national leaders, was disrupted by hired hoodlums who injured participants and scattered the gathering,” Malami revealed.
Expressing gratitude to Atiku, Malami praised the former Vice President’s show of solidarity.
“It is heartening to witness leaders prioritizing principles over politics, demonstrating that the bonds of our shared humanity and the sanctity of our democracy transcend partisan lines,” he stated.
He concluded with a rallying call:
“Let this moment serve as a clarion call: the path to a stronger Nigeria lies in unity, justice, and the unwavering pursuit of truth.”
