Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has moved to calm mounting fears among Maiduguri residents over the rising water levels at the Alau Dam, assuring the public that there is no imminent threat of flooding.
Concerns had surged across the state capital in the wake of persistent heavy rains, with many residents, particularly in low-lying communities, expressing alarm over the potential for flooding. The anxiety prompted the governor to personally visit the Alau Dam site, where reconstruction work is currently ongoing.
Speaking after inspecting the dam, Governor Zulum acknowledged the growing public concern but emphasized that technical assessments conducted by experts have so far shown no reason for panic.
“As at now, based on the engineering knowledge we are having, we concluded that there is no cause for alarm,” Zulum said, stressing that the situation is under control.
The governor explained that to ease the pressure on the dam, new water channels had been created, leading to a measurable reduction in the water level. “The water level has dropped by about four inches in recent days, and we expect a further decline,” he added.
However, Governor Zulum also sounded a note of caution, noting the unpredictable nature of weather patterns. “Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. We are working and shall continue to monitor this programme. The contractor is doing a good job,” he assured.
The government has promised to continue close surveillance of the situation to ensure the safety of residents while reconstruction and maintenance efforts continue at the dam site.
