In a bold and scathing resignation letter that has sent political shockwaves through Katsina State and beyond, Senator Abubakar Sadiq Yar’Adua, a founding member of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and later the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially withdrawn his membership from the ruling party, citing gross betrayal of its founding principles and utter neglect of Nigeria's masses.
In a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of APC in Wakilin Gabas I Ward, Katsina Local Government Area, dated July 28, 2025, Yar’Adua minced no words in expressing his discontent with the current trajectory of the APC-led government, which he accused of abandoning its original vision to serve the common man.
“As a sitting Senator, I and many other progressives made great sacrifices to unite forces against the then President Goodluck Jonathan's lame-duck government,” Yar’Adua wrote, “but today, the same elements who pretended to be comrades have turned out to be even more retrogressive and re-actionary.”
The former lawmaker expressed disillusionment with what he described as the APC’s transformation into a safe haven for corrupt elites and enemies of the Nigerian people. He accused the current administration of implementing “destructive economic policies” that have “desecrated the lives, welfare, dignity, and livelihood of our people.”
In perhaps the most damning part of his letter, Yar’Adua referred to those in power as “urban bandits” or “bandits in government,” borrowing a term once used by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai. He painted a grim picture of a nation where the government turns a blind eye as citizens are “maimed, intimidated, sexually harassed, assaulted, killed, and uprooted from their lands.”
“I cannot sit idly by or remain in a political party that has completely abandoned its foundational principles,” he declared. “I, therefore, have no option but to join hands with like-minds to democratically remove this bad, selfish, and stinkingly corrupt administration.”
Yar’Adua revealed that he would be joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as “a party for all Nigerians… poised to re-shape the course of Nigeria’s political history.”
The resignation comes at a time of increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Yar’Adua’s exit from the APC is seen as a major blow to the party in the North-West, especially Katsina State, where he has maintained a strong support base.
Political analysts say his departure could inspire a wave of defections, especially among ideologically inclined party loyalists who have grown weary of the APC’s perceived drift.
As the nation inches closer to another political cycle, Yar’Adua’s defection and his fiery farewell message may well become a rallying cry for opposition movements seeking to capitalize on growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration.
