ABUJA — The Presidency has issued a stern warning to political opponents, media commentators, and pressure groups, vowing to defend the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against what it described as “misguided criticism and deliberate falsehoods.”
Reacting to a recent newspaper editorial, the Presidency said the piece was exaggerated, unbalanced, and a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s current state. Presidential spokespersons stressed that the administration’s reforms — including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification, and renewed social intervention programmes — were tough but necessary measures to stabilise the economy and secure long-term growth.
Citing instances of what it called “malicious distortions,” the Presidency accused certain opposition figures of engaging in propaganda to discredit the government’s efforts. It particularly referenced recent statements from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and factions within Afenifere, describing them as “unfair, biased, and motivated by personal or political animosity rather than facts.”
The government insisted that under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria is on a recovery path, with renewed foreign investor confidence, ongoing infrastructure projects, and targeted support for vulnerable citizens.
“Criticism is welcome in a democracy,” the Presidency said, “but twisting facts to mislead Nigerians is unacceptable. We will continue to put the facts on record and ensure that no false narrative stands unchallenged.”
The warning comes as political tensions intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with both ruling and opposition parties locked in a battle over public perception of Tinubu’s performance.
