A tragic confrontation in Bauchi State has led to the death of a soldier and the arrest of a police officer, sparking widespread concern about security operatives’ involvement in illegal mining activities.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area, when troops of the 33 Artillery Brigade attempted to stop a truck suspected to be conveying solid minerals from an illegal mining site in Yalo. The driver reportedly refused to stop at the checkpoint, forcing soldiers to pursue and intercept the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said a heated altercation ensued between Master Warrant Officer Ali Haruna and a Mobile Police officer, Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, who was allegedly escorting the truck. In the scuffle, Ibrahim reportedly opened fire, shooting the soldier in the stomach. Haruna was rushed to Gombe Specialist Hospital but later died from his injuries.
The soldiers immediately overpowered the police officer and disarmed him, while the truck driver escaped during the chaos. The truck was impounded, and Ibrahim has since been taken into custody.
Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Atang Hallet Solomon, confirmed the incident, adding that the Army and Police have launched a joint investigation. Bauchi State Commissioner of Police has also met with the Commander of 33 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier-General U.J. Simon, to prevent escalation.
Local observers said the shooting raises questions about the deepening nexus between illegal mining and security operatives. Community leaders commended the restraint shown by the soldiers, noting that they avoided reprisal despite the provocation.
Authorities assured that justice will be served as investigations continue.
