The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a landslide victory in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday in Oyo State, with its candidate, Folajimi Oyekunle Don, emerging as the winner.
Official ward results released showed the PDP polling 18,530 votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC), which managed 8,266 votes. The outcome gave PDP a comfortable margin of more than 10,000 votes.
Breakdown of the results across the 12 wards revealed PDP’s dominance, with wide margins recorded in several key areas. For instance, in Ward 3, PDP scored 2,354 votes against APC’s 1,092, while in Ward 8, the party polled 2,339 votes compared to APC’s 899. The closest contest came in Ward 5, where PDP had 1,580 votes against APC’s 1,047.
The victory consolidates PDP’s influence in Ibadan North and is seen as a major boost for Governor Seyi Makinde’s political base in Oyo State. Party faithful trooped out in celebration shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyekunle Don as winner.
Speaking after his victory, Oyekunle Don expressed gratitude to the people of Ibadan North for their overwhelming support and promised effective representation at the National Assembly. “This mandate is for the people, and I will not disappoint. My focus will be on delivering quality representation that reflects the needs and aspirations of my constituents,” he said.
Observers described the election as largely peaceful, with security agencies ensuring orderliness at polling units. INEC officials also commended the high voter turnout across the wards.
With this victory, PDP has reaffirmed its stronghold in Oyo State politics and strengthened its position ahead of future elections.
