Academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have come to a halt following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s staff unions.
The industrial action, which began on Thursday, August 1, 2025, was declared by a coalition of staff unions operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The unions, in a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, accused the university management of failing to address several unresolved issues bordering on staff welfare, promotion, and poor working conditions.
The strike notice, obtained by Channels Television and other media outlets, was jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Sylvester O. Idowu, as well as SSANU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi. Similar endorsements were made by other union executives.
“All members of staff of the university and its affiliate campuses, including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and LASU’s Epe campus, are directed to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.
Students across LASU’s campuses were seen stranded as classrooms, offices, and laboratories remained locked. The strike has disrupted lectures, administrative functions, and ongoing research activities, causing tension among students, especially final-year undergraduates preparing for their examinations.
Efforts to reach the university management for comment have so far been unsuccessful. However, sources within the administration hinted that a meeting of the university’s governing council may be convened soon to address the crisis.
The Lagos State Government, which supervises the university, is also yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Stakeholders are urging urgent intervention to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar and to restore normalcy to the institution.
