The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the August 16 bye-elections held in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies, describing the process as a “sham” marred by irregularities.
In a statement issued shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the outcome of the polls, the PDP alleged widespread intimidation of voters, massive vote buying, and open interference by state-backed forces, which it claimed compromised the credibility of the elections.
Party officials maintained that despite the enthusiasm of voters who turned out in large numbers, the will of the people was subverted through “state-sponsored manipulation” orchestrated to favor the ruling party.
“The exercise fell short of democratic standards and cannot be said to reflect the true wishes of the people of Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies,” the party said, adding that it would consult its legal team to determine the next line of action.
While INEC has yet to respond to the PDP’s claims, observers note that the outcome of these bye-elections could heighten political tensions in Kaduna State, where competition between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP has remained fierce.
The ruling APC, however, has maintained that the elections were free, fair, and credible, hailing the victory of its candidates as proof of the people’s confidence in the party’s leadership.
Political watchers believe the PDP’s rejection of the results may set the stage for a legal battle, as opposition figures insist that only a transparent process can restore confidence in the democratic system.
