The Chairman of Guard Time Information, Human Rights Activists Nationwide, Mr. Bibi Oduku, has officially appointed Barrister Alice Wowuota Iwara as the Head of Women and Children Affairs in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Announcing the appointment, Mr. Oduku praised Barrister Iwara’s long-standing passion for women’s empowerment and her commitment to the welfare of children, noting that she is well-positioned to champion human rights issues affecting women and children across the FCT and its environs.
In her acceptance speech, Barrister Alice Wowuota Iwara expressed deep appreciation for the appointment, describing it as both an honour and a call to service. “I am deeply honoured and humbled by this appointment. I am passionate about protecting the rights and advancing the well-being of women and children, and I intend to use this office as a platform to drive meaningful transformation,” she said.
She emphasized that her work would focus on promoting policies and initiatives that safeguard the interests of women and children while ensuring their voices are heard and their rights fully protected. “As part of my activities in this role, I intend to launch strong advocacy and awareness campaigns against rape, domestic violence, and child abuse. I will also establish support programs for survivors, create empowerment initiatives for women to achieve economic independence, and collaborate with relevant agencies, law enforcement, and NGOs to ensure justice and protection for victims,” Iwara added.
Human rights advocates have welcomed the appointment, describing it as timely in view of rising cases of gender-based violence, child exploitation, and economic marginalization of women across Nigeria. Statistics from rights groups show that cases of domestic violence and child abuse have seen a troubling increase in recent years, prompting calls for stronger advocacy and legal reforms.
