Gunmen have killed two police officers escorting the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, in a deadly ambush along the Okigwe section of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway in Imo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, August 3, 2025, after the lawmaker’s convoy experienced a mechanical breakdown. While Hon. Ikoro and others in the convoy moved ahead, the two officers stayed behind to secure the faulty vehicle. It was during this vulnerable moment that unknown assailants launched their attack, killing both officers on the spot.
Sources revealed that the slain policemen were attached to the Ebonyi State Command and were part of a team providing security for the lawmaker, who represents Afikpo North-West constituency. The gunmen reportedly escaped before reinforcements could arrive.
Confirming the attack, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, ordered an immediate deployment of tactical teams to the area. He also assured the public that a full-scale manhunt has commenced to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The corpses of the two officers have since been deposited at a nearby morgue, while police investigators have sealed off the crime scene and begun combing the surrounding bush paths believed to be escape routes.
This attack adds to the growing concern over the rising insecurity across Nigeria’s Southeast region, where government officials and security agents have repeatedly come under violent assault from non-state actors. The police have called on residents of the area to remain calm and provide useful information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
As of press time, the Ebonyi lawmaker has yet to issue a formal statement, but his aides confirm he is safe and unhurt.
