Dropping Shettima Might Jeopardize Tinubu’s Re-Election – Shittu Warns

Former Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against dropping Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying such a move could endanger his chances of securing a second term.

Speaking during an interview on AIT’s Focus Nigeria, Shittu described Shettima as a highly competent and loyal deputy whose performance has earned him continued relevance in the Tinubu administration.

“Shettima wasn’t chosen as vice president because of any ANPP legacy. He earned the position based on his personal merit,” Shittu said. “He is exceptionally intelligent, and I would vote for him any day. I don’t see any reason why people would question his place in the administration.”

Amid growing speculation that President Tinubu may opt for a new running mate ahead of the 2027 polls, the Presidency has dismissed the claims, stating that campaign decisions will be made known only at the appropriate time.

However, Shittu cautioned against even entertaining the idea of replacing Shettima. “There’s no justification for entertaining doubts about his continued role. If such proposals exist, we need to tread carefully,” he said.

He further noted that Shettima has done nothing to warrant being sidelined and warned that such a move could destabilize the administration. “They must continue as a team. You don’t remove someone who hasn’t done anything wrong,” Shittu concluded.

His remarks have added to the growing discourse within the political space as the 2027 elections slowly come into focus, with many calling for continuity, unity, and stability within the APC-led government.
