From the New Delta Grassroot Movement NDGM
Your Excellency,
With the deepest sense of responsibility and patriotic concern for our dear country, we, the members of the New Delta Grassroot Movement, write to you today. This letter comes not as an attack on your leadership, but as a heartfelt cry from the depths of the South-South, where our people have continued to carry the heavy burden of bad governance, political recklessness, and failed promises.
Mr. President, it is becoming increasingly clear that certain Governors from the South-South region, despite parading themselves around you at every national and international engagement, have failed woefully to translate your vision of Renewed Hope into practical development in their respective states. They follow you to Ghana, to Brazil, to Japan, and soon to other foreign lands, yet their footprints back home show nothing but mediocrity, political desperation, and an obsession with power.
Our states remain riddled with ethnic crises that tear at the very fabric of our coexistence. The Ijaw/Itsekiri crisis in Delta State remains a reminder that when leaders focus on personal ambitions rather than the welfare of the people, chaos thrives. Communities are bleeding, youths are unemployed, families are displaced, and instead of healing old wounds, our Governors are busy oiling their political machines for second-term ambitions.
We watch with great pain as Governors in other regions take decisive steps towards improving the lives of their people. Some Governors in the South-East and North-Central have courageously reviewed and increased the minimum wage to reflect the current economic realities. Others have embarked on transformational projects such as light rails, bridges, industrial hubs, and world-class educational centres. These are tangible achievements that Nigerians can see and touch.
But in the South-South? Billions are being spent on propaganda, political jamborees, and the desperate chase for second-term tickets. Instead of legacies, they are building campaign war-chests. Instead of bridges, they are constructing personal empires. Instead of peace, they are planting the seeds of division.
Your Excellency, history teaches us that unchecked political desperation leads to dangerous outcomes. We remember, with bitterness, how political rivalry and ambition played roles in the tragic murder of Chief Bola Ige, one of the brightest lights of our democracy. We fear that if this current obsession with second terms continues unchecked, the South-South could be plunged into lethal political crises that will not only destabilize the region but also tarnish your legacy as President.
Mr. President, it is not enough for these Governors to follow you around like shadows in photo opportunities abroad. Nigerians are beginning to ask difficult questions: Does President Tinubu celebrate mediocrity? Does he reward failure? This is dangerous because your vision of Renewed Hope risks being misrepresented as empty slogans if the very people closest to you in political corridors are dragging their states backward.
We, the grassroots of the Niger Delta, implore you: call these Governors to order. Let them understand that governance is not a personal inheritance. Let them be reminded that leadership is about the people, not about second terms. We urge you and other well-meaning party leaders and stakeholders to intervene urgently. Let us avoid the path of blood, bitterness, and breakdown.
Our region has given Nigeria so much — the crude oil that sustains the economy, the human resources that strengthen our workforce, and the cultural heritage that unites us as one. Yet, our people continue to live in poverty, underdevelopment, and fear. This injustice must not continue under your watch.
Your Excellency, posterity is watching. Nigerians are watching. The world is watching. If you do not act, the legacy of your administration may be stained by the failings of those who, while standing beside you, are busy betraying the trust of their people.
We speak today with passion, with pain, and with hope that you, Mr. President, will rise above political sentiments to correct these ills before it is too late.
May Almighty God guide you with wisdom, courage, and the strength to act decisively in the interest of all Nigerians.
