Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has revealed that the players are yet to receive the $100,000 reward and other bonuses promised to them following their triumphant outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking to journalists, Ajibade expressed disappointment over the prolonged delay, stressing that the assurances given by relevant authorities have not been fulfilled months after the team’s historic victory.
“We fought hard to bring pride to the nation, and we were promised this reward as a motivation for our efforts. Unfortunately, we have not seen anything yet, and it’s beginning to affect our morale,” Ajibade lamented.
The Super Falcons, who made history by clinching their 12th WAFCON title, were widely celebrated across the country, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and sports officials pledging financial rewards in recognition of their performance. However, sources close to the team disclosed that bureaucratic bottlenecks and funding approvals may be contributing to the delay.
Sports analysts have warned that the continued neglect of such promises could dampen the spirit of national teams, especially in women’s football, where players already face limited financial incentives compared to their male counterparts.
Ajibade urged the government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to act swiftly, noting that timely fulfillment of pledges is key to sustaining the team’s motivation ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
