The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a National Flood Forecast Alert No. 30-25-002-21, warning of an impending high-risk flood period expected to impact 739 communities across 162 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 29 states of the federation.
According to the official statement released on July 21, 2025, the forecast period spans from 22nd July to 5th August, 2025, with the alert level designated as WARNING, signaling the likelihood of moderate to very high flooding.
The affected states include: Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
Expected Impacts:
- Flooding of vulnerable communities
- Disruption to key transportation routes
- Potential destruction of farmlands, homes, infrastructure, and sources of livelihood
NIHSA’s Recommendations:
NIHSA has called on all emergency management agencies, state and local governments, and critical stakeholders to immediately activate flood preparedness and response protocols. Authorities are also urged to begin public sensitization and evacuation planning, particularly in identified high-risk zones.
Communities in the projected path are strongly advised to remain alert, follow official advisories, and move to higher grounds when necessary.
