Daura, Katsina State – The ancient city of Daura was engulfed in solemnity today as dignitaries, political allies, family members, and thousands of sympathizers converged for the Third-Day prayers in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR).
Among the most emotionally touched was former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, who described the late leader not only as a statesman but as a father figure and mentor whose impact on his life and career was both profound and enduring.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un,” Malami began, visibly emotional “His demise remains a deep personal loss to me, not just as a leader of our great nation, but as a father figure whose principles, discipline, and unwavering commitment to justice and national development shaped my journey in public service.”
The event, held in line with Islamic tradition, was marked by Qur’anic recitations, prayers for the repose of the soul of the former President, and acts of charity—reflecting the values Buhari held dear in life.
Malami, who is also Buhari’s in-law, recounted the late leader’s legendary humility and spiritual devotion. “As we gathered to offer prayers and alms, I was once again reminded of the simplicity, humility, and spiritual strength that defined Baba Buhari’s life,” he said.
The Third-Day prayers—known locally as Sadakar Uku—are a significant rite in Northern Nigeria's Islamic mourning tradition, signifying a collective farewell and continued prayer for the deceased.
President Buhari, a retired General and former military Head of State, passed away recently after a lifetime dedicated to national service, discipline, and anti-corruption. His legacy, many believe, will continue to shape Nigeria's democratic journey.
Malami concluded his tribute with a prayer: “May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, expand his grave, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen.”
The late President’s final days and burial have drawn tributes from across the country and beyond, with many calling for a national monument in his honour.
As Nigeria mourns a towering figure in its political history, the emotional farewell in Daura serves as a reminder that beyond politics, Buhari was a symbol of integrity and service.
