In a swift response to the devastating floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of N2 billion for the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the disaster.
Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who led a federal delegation to the affected communities, announced the presidential directive during his on-the-spot assessment visit. According to the Vice President, President Tinubu also ordered the immediate distribution of 20 trucks of rice to alleviate the suffering of victims who have been displaced by the flood.
"The people of Mokwa are a priority to President Tinubu," Shettima declared, emphasizing that the administration is committed to addressing the plight of those affected. He added that the President has also directed the urgent repair of damaged bridges and the rehabilitation of drainage systems in the area to prevent future disasters.
In a related move, the President had earlier activated the National Emergency Response Centre and mandated all relevant federal agencies to provide swift and sustained relief to the victims. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has since delivered essential supplies to displaced families, while search and rescue teams made up of NEMA personnel, Nigerian Red Cross members, and local volunteers continue combing the area for missing persons and recovery operations.
The flood, which claimed multiple lives and rendered hundreds homeless, has been described as one of the most severe natural disasters to hit the region in recent years.
