Gumsuri/Wovi, Borno State — Torrential overnight rains unleashed devastating floods across the Gumsuri and Wovi communities in Borno State, killing at least two people and displacing dozens as homes were swept away and infrastructure severely damaged.
Residents described scenes of chaos as water levels rose rapidly, submerging houses and leaving many to scramble for safety with little more than the clothes on their backs. The bodies of two victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were recovered from the wreckage early Thursday morning.
Initial reports indicate that over 30 homes were completely destroyed, with several others partially damaged beyond repair. Floodwaters also submerged farmlands and cut off access roads, complicating rescue efforts.
Emergency response teams from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and local volunteers are currently on the ground assessing the full extent of the damage and providing immediate relief to displaced families. Humanitarian organizations have been called in to assist with food, shelter, and medical care for affected residents.
“This was a sudden and severe downpour unlike anything we’ve seen this season,” said Mallam Umar Suleiman, a community leader. “We need urgent support—tents, clean water, and medicine. Many of us have lost everything.”
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of heavy rainfall across the northeastern region, but locals say they were unprepared for the scale of destruction.
As the floodwaters begin to recede, concerns mount over the risk of waterborne diseases and further displacement. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and heed future weather advisories.
Calls are growing for long-term intervention programs to help rebuild homes and strengthen community resilience against climate-related disasters.
