In a significant development in the terrorism case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court has ordered the relocation of the trial to the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja.
The decision comes as the court seeks to facilitate an on-site inspection of a container allegedly used to smuggle a radio transmitter into Nigeria — a key piece of evidence central to the Federal Government’s charges against Kanu.
Kanu, who has faced multiple charges including terrorism, secessionist incitement, and illegal importation of communication equipment, was expected to appear in court today. However, proceedings will now take place within the DSS premises, a move legal analysts say underscores the sensitive nature of the evidence and national security concerns surrounding the case.
The DSS has reportedly secured the container in question, which prosecution claims was imported under false pretenses and used to aid IPOB’s clandestine operations.
Kanu’s legal team has consistently challenged the government’s allegations, insisting the charges are politically motivated and that the IPOB leader’s right to fair trial is being violated.
A new date is expected to be fixed soon for the continuation of the trial at the DSS facility.
