The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stern warning to the Anambra State Government, threatening legal action over what it describes as an unconstitutional ₦50 million campaign permit fee recently introduced by the Anambra Signage and Advertisement Agency (ANSAA) for gubernatorial candidates contesting in the upcoming November 8 election.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the ADC condemned the policy as “a blatant assault on democracy,” accusing the state government of attempting to stifle opposition voices through excessive financial barriers. The party said the fee is not only arbitrary but also inconsistent with Nigeria’s Electoral Act and constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression, association, and political participation.
“The demand for ₦50 million from each candidate just to display campaign materials is outrageous, discriminatory, and clearly designed to favour the ruling party in the state,” the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary stated. “This is nothing but an attempt to suppress the opposition and turn the election into a money-driven charade.”
According to the party, the matter will be taken to court if the state government fails to reverse the directive, warning that “this dangerous precedent must not be allowed to stand.” The ADC also called on other political parties, civil society groups, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take a firm stance against what it termed “electoral extortion.”
This controversy adds to growing concerns about the fairness and inclusiveness of the electoral process in Anambra State, with observers calling for transparency and equitable access to campaign platforms for all aspirants regardless of party affiliation or financial capacity.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Anambra State Government or the ANSAA.
