The crisis rocking the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has taken a new and dangerous dimension, as the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has issued a stern 72-hour ultimatum to the Federal Ministry of Education, demanding the immediate removal of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, and suspension of the institution’s Governing Council Chairman, Senator Victor Udo Udoma SAN.
In a strongly worded petition addressed to the Honourable Minister of Education, NAUS described the situation in FUOYE as a full-blown ethical, moral, and institutional collapse, warning that the continued silence from the Ministry threatens the very foundations of Nigeria’s university system.
Signed by the National President of NAUS, Comrade Josiah Peter Oche, the letter declares unwavering support for the petition earlier submitted by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on May 2, 2025, led by Comrade Olushola Oladoja GCNS. NAUS emphasized that they had independently investigated the allegations, participated in a neutral student-led fact-finding mission, and found all accusations against the Vice-Chancellor to be credible and damning.
NAUS outlined a litany of misconducts under Prof. Fasina’s administration, including:
1. Allegations of serial sexual harassment, most notably the case raised by Engr. Folashade Adebayo of SSANU, involving a culture of exchanging grades for sexual favours.
2. Promotion of Dr. Agbegbedia, who reportedly failed a student for refusing his advances, despite an external re-mark showing she passed.
3. Suppression of whistleblowers and the reward of alleged perpetrators.
4. Misuse of university funds, fraudulent TETFund projects, unlawful dismissals, and illegal procurement practices.
5. Gross negligence that allegedly led to the death of a student named Modupe two years ago due to ignored security warnings.
NAUS expressed outrage that despite the disturbing audio evidence provided and widespread student concerns, the Ministry of Education has remained silent. “This silence is not neutrality—it is dangerous,” the association warned.
The association further criticized the university’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), describing their recent public rejoinder in support of the VC as the product of intimidation, manipulation, and compromise. NAUS insists the SUG no longer represents FUOYE students and should be disregarded.
Their demands are clear:
1. Immediate removal of Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina as Vice-Chancellor within 72 hours.
2. Suspension of Senator Victor Udo Udoma SAN pending investigations.
3. An independent investigative panel to revisit all sexual harassment claims.
4. Special audit of FUOYE’s finances under Prof. Fasina.
5. Full protection for whistleblowers.
6. Public acknowledgement of institutional failures and a commitment to justice.
Failure to meet these demands within 72 hours, NAUS warned, will trigger a full-scale peaceful shutdown of FUOYE starting May 7, 2025, followed by mass demonstrations at the Ministry of Education, National Assembly, and Presidential Villa. An international media campaign is also being planned to expose what they describe as “a festering crisis” and to defend the image of Nigerian education.
“We are not a movement of noise but of truth and justice,” Comrade Josiah Peter Oche stated. “If nothing is done, history will remember that we tried to save our education system before it was too late.”
The Honourable Minister of Education is yet to issue a public response.
