The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has concluded its primary elections ahead of the July 12 local government polls, producing 55 chairmanship candidates across the state's local government areas and local council development areas.
The party's primaries, held under intense competition and strict supervision, showcased the vibrant internal democratic process of the APC, with popular political figures and emerging grassroots mobilizers vying for the coveted positions. Among the successful candidates are notable names including the sibling of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and the son of former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe.
The emergence of these candidates highlights a strong blend of political legacy and youthful ambition. Party officials noted that the selection process was transparent and fiercely contested, with aspirants demonstrating commendable political sagacity and community-oriented manifestos.
Speaking after the primaries, the APC State Chairman expressed confidence in the calibre of candidates presented, describing them as “tested and trusted party loyalists who understand the grassroots and will deliver effective governance at the local level.”
“This is not just about winning elections; it’s about deepening democracy and ensuring quality representation for our people. We are fielding candidates with proven track records and strong connections to their communities,” he said.
The announcement of the 55 candidates also sets the stage for robust campaigning as the party prepares to retain its dominance across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.
Political observers believe the presence of influential political families among the candidates could sway public sentiment, although many argue that performance and credibility will determine voter choices in the coming elections.
As Lagos braces for the July 12 local government elections, the APC’s unified front and early readiness may give it an advantage over other parties still grappling with internal alignments.
