In a landmark show of unity and political resolve, governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have unanimously adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. The formal endorsement took place during the APC National Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

The endorsement was initiated by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, who moved the motion for President Tinubu’s adoption as the sole candidate of the party. The motion was promptly seconded by the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, and was met with a resounding voice vote and a standing ovation by all present.

The summit, which attracted a broad spectrum of APC stakeholders, had in attendance Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as well as serving and former governors, ministers, and members of the National Assembly.

According to Governor Uzodinma, the endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term is not only a reflection of the party’s confidence in his leadership but a patriotic affirmation of the successes recorded so far under his administration. “In just two years, President Tinubu has demonstrated uncommon capacity, courage, and clarity of purpose in tackling the nation’s longstanding challenges,” he said.

Governor Uba Sani, in supporting the motion, hailed Tinubu’s achievements in stabilizing the economy, reforming key sectors, and strengthening Nigeria’s position in global affairs. “What we are witnessing today is the dawn of a new Nigeria, and that is why we, the APC governors, have chosen to stand firmly behind a leader who is charting a new course for our future,” Sani declared.

The National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed the endorsement, describing it as a strategic and timely step that will further solidify the unity of the party ahead of the 2027 elections. He praised the Progressive Governors for their foresight and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the party.

Several speakers at the summit echoed the sentiments of support and reaffirmed the party’s resolve to consolidate on the progress made under the Tinubu administration. There was also a notable emphasis on internal party reforms, grassroots mobilization, and youth engagement, which were presented as critical pillars for the APC’s continued dominance in Nigeria’s political space.

While some political observers have described the early endorsement as unprecedented, others see it as a calculated move to ward off potential dissent within the party and send a clear message of cohesion and preparedness to the opposition.

As the 2027 race unofficially kicks off, this strong show of solidarity from the APC’s most powerful bloc may set the tone for the months ahead—potentially securing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s place in Nigerian history as one of the few to secure back-to-back democratic mandates.
