In a fiery rebuke that underscores the deepening discontent across the nation, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has lambasted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of deliberately weaponizing poverty and plunging millions of Nigerians into a new era of suffering and hopelessness.
In a statement signed by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Effiong Nyong, the ADC decried what it termed “the second wave of slavery” gripping the nation—driven by skyrocketing tariffs, relentless multiple taxation, and the controversial removal of fuel subsidy which, it argued, has become the symbol of economic asphyxiation.
"The people are groaning under an unbearable burden," the statement read. "What we are witnessing today is not just hardship; it is a calculated form of economic subjugation. The government of President Tinubu has turned the basic necessities of life into luxuries, while families struggle to feed, move, and survive."
Dr. Nyong painted a grim picture of a nation where inflation is soaring, purchasing power is vanishing, and insecurity remains unchecked. He described the administration’s economic policies as “anti-people, profit-driven experiments” that have failed to cushion the effects of their own shockwaves.
"The rising cost of electricity and the endless stream of taxes are squeezing small businesses to death," he said. "The streets tell a clearer story than any official statistic. Nigerians are angry, exhausted, and on the brink."
The ADC called on the Tinubu government to reverse its policies and listen to the cries of the masses before the situation deteriorates beyond control. It urged a return to “people-centered governance,” emphasizing that a government disconnected from the pain of its citizens cannot claim legitimacy.
This accusation by the ADC adds to a growing chorus of criticism from civil society, opposition parties, and everyday citizens who argue that the Tinubu administration, one year after taking over the reins of power, has yet to deliver on its promises of renewed hope.
