In what sources described as a decisive and stormy gathering, governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and key members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) converged in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to deliberate on critical internal matters threatening the unity and survival of the opposition party.
The emergency meeting, held behind closed doors at the behest of Governor Seyi Makinde, saw the attendance of no fewer than eight PDP governors, top-ranking NWC members, and influential party stakeholders. It comes amid mounting pressure for the expulsion of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the immediate removal of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Insiders privy to the deliberations revealed that the meeting focused squarely on repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, with emphasis on reclaiming its lost glory and curbing the influence of controversial figures seen as undermining its core principles.
One of the flashpoints of the gathering was the endorsement of Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye as the rightful National Secretary of the party — a move now reinforced by a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming his legitimacy. This development is viewed as a major blow to Senator Anyanwu, who is reportedly banking on political godfathers and regional alliances to cling to power.
The political unrest in Rivers State also took center stage, particularly the fierce battle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his embattled predecessor and political rival, Nyesom Wike. Fubara, who is the suspended Vice Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, has continued to receive support from his fellow governors who view Wike's persistent interference as destabilizing and politically toxic.
According to sources at the meeting, the consensus among party chieftains is that peace within the PDP can only return with Wike’s formal ouster. "The soul of the party is under siege," one of the governors reportedly said. "We cannot rebuild this house with those who are hell-bent on tearing it down from within."
The Ibadan meeting is widely seen as a turning point for the PDP, as leaders weigh bold moves that may redefine the party’s structure, leadership, and readiness to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
Though official statements remain cautious, insiders suggest that a communiqué outlining key resolutions from the meeting will be released soon — possibly signaling the beginning of a political shake-up that may claim the heads of powerful figures once considered untouchable.
