In what appears to be a bold political gesture, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed willingness to welcome former Governor James Ibori into the fold of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a comment that has sparked conversations about the evolving dynamics of Urhobo and Delta State politics.
Governor Oborevwori made this remark on Tuesday during a solemn vigil mass in honour of the late former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Professor Amos Utuama, held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South Local Government Area. While delivering a heartfelt tribute to the departed elder statesman, the governor used the opportunity to emphasize the pressing need for unity among the Urhobo political class, suggesting that embracing political veterans like Ibori could be a step toward reconciliation and collective progress.
“I am very happy to be here today, seeing this large gathering for one man,” the governor remarked, visibly moved by the turnout. “The preaching today is not about the dead, it is about the living. There are many things Prof. Utuama did while he was alive. I will mention just a few key ones. The land allocated to him in Asaba while he was Deputy Governor, he donated it to the Catholic Church and also contributed to building the church. To me, that is a kingdom investment.”
Governor Oborevwori expressed hope that the passing of Professor Utuama would serve as a rallying point for peace and unity in Ughelli South and the larger Urhobo nation. Describing the late deputy governor as a man who “lived well and died well,” he noted that Utuama’s legacy should inspire a renewed commitment to purpose-driven leadership.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, in his exhortation, affirmed that the late Utuama left an indelible mark both in the Church and in public service. He urged the bereaved family to uphold his values of godliness, humility, and selflessness, reminding all in attendance that a Christian's death is merely a transition into eternal glory.
Also speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Ovie Utuama, son of the deceased, appreciated the outpouring of love and support from friends and associates, while requesting prayers to help the family through the grief.
The ceremony, though somber, also echoed with political undertones, particularly as Oborevwori’s remarks rekindled interest in James Ibori’s political journey and potential realignment. Observers say this development could redefine alliances in the Delta political landscape as 2027 gradually comes into view.
