Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State and a towering figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has issued a stark warning to politicians who are abandoning the opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking shortly after his election as a National Delegate during the PDP Local Government Congress held in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, Lamido described the current wave of defections as a dangerous trend that threatens not only the future of the PDP but also the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
Addressing journalists and party faithful, Lamido did not mince words in criticizing those jumping ship, declaring that such moves are tantamount to "signing their political doom." According to him, the defections are not acts of genuine political realignment but are rather motivated by fear, intimidation, and selfish ambition, warning that history would not be kind to those who abandon their political ideals for short-term gains.
"In their wisdom, my people elected me as a delegate, not because I needed it, but because experience is essential during such trying times," Lamido stated, emphasizing the critical role seasoned politicians must play in safeguarding the nation's democratic institutions. He lamented that the mass exodus from the PDP was creating an ominous atmosphere, eroding the vital opposition needed to check the excesses of the ruling party.
Lamido, who served two terms as governor and remains a respected voice in national politics, urged loyal party members to stand firm, insisting that the PDP remains the only credible alternative capable of rescuing Nigeria from its current socio-economic challenges. He warned defectors that political opportunism would eventually lead to their downfall, as the APC, he argued, has failed to deliver on the promises that brought it to power.
