LAGOS – Momentum is building around former President Goodluck Jonathan as Dr. Jibril Mustapha, president of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former head of the Buhari Youth Organisation, issued a fervent appeal for him to enter the 2027 presidential race.
Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday in Lagos, Mustapha described Jonathan as the most suitable leader to rescue Nigeria from its worsening economic difficulties, rising insecurity, and alarming unemployment rates. He urged the former president to answer the call of millions of Nigerians seeking a unifying figure to steer the country back on course.
"As we approach the crucial 2027 elections, Nigeria desperately needs a unifier with proven democratic credentials," Mustapha declared. "We believe that former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose previous tenure was marked by respect for democratic institutions and citizen welfare, remains the beacon of hope we need to restore national pride and unity."
The Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation cited Jonathan’s track record, including his peaceful handover of power in 2015 — a first in Nigeria's history — as evidence of his commitment to democracy. Mustapha emphasized that Jonathan’s return could heal the deep divisions threatening the nation's stability.
Calls for Jonathan’s comeback have been gathering momentum across the country, particularly among northern leaders, youth groups, and segments of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), who believe he is the best candidate to navigate Nigeria through its current turmoil. While constitutionally eligible to serve one more term, Jonathan has so far remained silent about his political plans, neither confirming nor denying interest in the 2027 race.
Political observers say the clamor for his return reflects a broader disillusionment with the current leadership and a yearning for the relative stability and economic growth experienced during Jonathan’s time in office. However, it also raises questions about the readiness of Nigeria’s political class to embrace experienced leadership over emerging faces.
As 2027 draws closer, many eyes will remain fixed on Jonathan, wondering whether he will once again step into the political arena and whether the nation is ready for the return of a familiar hand at the helm.
