A Chinese national caught on video interacting with Nigerian Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers in Kaduna has denied widespread claims of bribery, clarifying that the scene, which has since gone viral, was a case of cultural misinterpretation.
Mr. Jiang, who led the visiting Chinese delegation, issued a statement on behalf of his team, insisting that no bribe was offered or solicited during the encounter. According to the statement, the exchange captured in the video was simply a goodwill gesture—an expression of appreciation for the officers’ professionalism and courtesy during their security engagement.
“The footage being circulated has been misread. In our culture, small tokens of gratitude are sometimes offered as a mark of respect and appreciation. There was no malicious intent or underhanded dealing involved,” the statement read.
Mr. Jiang further emphasized that the interaction took place in the open, suggesting transparency rather than secrecy. He expressed regret over the public misunderstanding that followed the video’s circulation and reassured Nigerian authorities and the public of their respect for local laws and protocols.
The Chinese delegation also used the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to ongoing collaborations in Nigeria, requesting the continued support and protection of security agencies for their legitimate business operations in the country.
While the video continues to stir conversations online, Mr. Jiang's clarification seeks to douse tensions and correct the narrative surrounding what he calls a “misinterpreted act of goodwill.”
