President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm directive to political leaders across Nigeria, urging them to focus their efforts and resources on uplifting the poor and vulnerable. Speaking on Monday night at a Ramadan fast-breaking event in Abuja, the President gathered governors, Federal Executive Council members, service chiefs, and heads of key agencies, emphasizing the need for selfless leadership.
"You honoured this invitation out of respect, not because you don’t have enough to eat or share," President Tinubu remarked, underscoring his call for a leadership style that prioritizes the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Reflecting on his administration's economic policies, Tinubu recalled his first Federal Executive Council meeting, where he likened the nation's financial challenges to “fetching water from a dry well.” However, he assured that his government remains committed to ensuring economic stability.
"We are still working hard to ensure that there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people," he declared.
The President urged governors and other leaders to see themselves as navigators guiding Nigeria to prosperity, urging them to be remembered for the good they do.
In response, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, commended Tinubu for his bold economic reforms. Similarly, the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, noted that prices of essential goods were gradually dropping due to the administration’s efforts.
With both Christian and Muslim prayers marking the event, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State highlighted the significance of unity, noting that fasting by both faiths at the same time was a divine sign of solidarity.
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Tinubu’s message to leaders was clear—govern with compassion, prioritize the people, and ensure that history remembers them for their service.
