President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the National Assembly for its patriotic stance in approving the State of Emergency in Rivers State, describing the move as crucial in restoring stability after over 15 months of political turmoil.
The President acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for setting aside partisan interests to prioritize the security and welfare of the people. He emphasized that the crisis had reached a dangerous tipping point, threatening vital oil and gas infrastructure and undermining national economic stability.
"The near-collapse of governance, risks to federal assets, and potential violence necessitated this intervention. This measure is a lifeline to protect livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability," President Tinubu stated.
The six-month emergency will allow the appointed Sole Administrator to restore order, address governance breakdowns, and foster dialogue. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the National Assembly to ensure peace, economic resilience, and national progress.
He urged Nigerians to support efforts to bring lasting stability to Rivers State.
