Supreme Court Shuts Door on Anyanwu’s PDP Bid

The Supreme Court has dealt a decisive blow to Samuel Anyanwu’s attempt to reclaim his position as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), striking out his application to halt the judgment that removed him from office.

In an unexpected turn during Monday’s proceedings, Anyanwu withdrew his request for a stay of execution, leading Justice Musa Awani Aba-Aji to dismiss the application. His counsel, Kingsley Njemanze (SAN), formally withdrew the appeal on his behalf.

This follows concurrent rulings by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in Enugu, which ousted Anyanwu and affirmed Chief Sunday Ude-Okoye as the rightful PDP National Secretary. The Court of Appeal’s December 2024 verdict had dismissed Anyanwu’s appeal as incompetent, ruling that he violated the PDP constitution by clinging to the position despite contesting in the 2024 Imo State governorship election.

Unwilling to concede, Anyanwu had taken his case to the Supreme Court in February, urging it to overturn the verdicts and reinstate him. He also sought an accelerated hearing, citing the importance of the office.

As the Supreme Court deliberates on the substantive case, this latest setback signals a tough road ahead for Anyanwu in his bid to reclaim power.
