The political arena in Lagos has been thrown into confusion as Lateef Onikoyi debunked the rumors surrounding the alleged resignation of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Onikoyi, in an interview with Arise News, stated that lawmakers were misled into believing that Obasa had agreed to step down after his reinstatement to pave the way for a Lagos West representative.
According to Onikoyi, Obasa never had any intention of relinquishing his position. He clarified that the Speaker only mentioned that he would "decide what to do later," a statement that was seemingly misinterpreted to fuel the resignation narrative.
He also extended his support to Mojisola Meranda, who resigned as Speaker to facilitate Obasa’s return, acknowledging the political sacrifices made in the process.
"The young lawmakers were deceived with this claim. I never expected Obasa to resign after regaining his seat because he clearly stated he would return and then decide on the next steps," Onikoyi explained.
He further called for transparency and accountability in the Lagos State House of Assembly, urging lawmakers to focus on governance rather than political scheming.
