The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has taken a significant step in advancing sustainable water resource management by hosting Mecon Engineering Geology for a presentation on the progress of the pilot project under the "Improving IWRM, Knowledge-Based Management, and Governance of the Niger Basin and the Iullemeden-Taoudeni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System (NB-ITTAS)." The event, held at NIHSA headquarters, follows the recent Regional Validation Workshop for the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and Strategic Action Plan (SAP) in Bamako, Mali.
The presentation, delivered by Mr. Chuka Justine Offodile of Mecon Engineering Geology, focused on "Improving Water Resources Availability for Facing Climatic Change Impacts in Wamakko, Sokoto State." He provided a comprehensive analysis of the challenges confronting the Wamakko Catchment, emphasizing climate variability and the need for an integrated approach to water resource management.
Mr. Offodile outlined key objectives of the pilot project, including:
- Assessing water resource challenges in Wamakko Catchment.
- Evaluating precipitation patterns to understand rainfall distribution.
- Addressing water scarcity by tackling surface water diversion and groundwater depletion.
- Conducting water quality assessments to monitor ecosystem impacts.
- Identifying recharge points to enhance groundwater sustainability.
- Promoting conjunctive water management for optimal use of surface and groundwater resources.
- Community sensitization to foster sustainable water practices and climate adaptation.
The presentation sparked robust discussions among NIHSA’s departmental directors, who provided expert insights and raised critical questions regarding implementation and long-term impact.
