In a shocking revelation that underscores rising political tensions in Gombe State, Comrade Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, the Acting State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged threats to his life by Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya and his security aides.
The petition, dated March 11, 2025, details an unsettling confrontation aboard an Overland Air flight from Gombe to Abuja on March 10, 2025. Modibbo, a former stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who recently defected to the SDP, alleges that his political realignment has turned him into a target for intimidation.
Tension In The Air: Mid-Flight Confrontation
According to Modibbo’s petition, he was seated in Premium Extra (Business Class), Seat 2A, when Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, a former governor of Gombe State, entered the aircraft and took his seat. Modibbo greeted him and resumed his seat. Shortly afterward, Governor Inuwa Yahaya boarded the same flight.
“His Excellency did not only reject my respect and greeting but said why should he answer my greeting as I caused his people to leave him,” Modibbo stated in the petition.
To avoid escalating the situation, Modibbo refrained from responding.
Blocked From Disembarking In Abuja
However, the situation took a dramatic turn upon arrival in Abuja. As passengers in Business Class prepared to disembark, the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Governor, CSP Abba Zuladaini, and the Governor’s Chief Detail, Chief Intelligence Officer Bello Aminu Tilli, reportedly moved from Economy Class and blocked Modibbo’s path on the governor’s orders.
> “Both the Governor and his aides threatened to kill me and to do such things to me that I will regret my life,” Modibbo claimed in his petition.
He further alleged that unknown persons have since been calling him, asking for his location, heightening his fears of a politically motivated attack.
A Cry For Urgent Protection
Modibbo’s petition appeals to the DSS and the Inspector General of Police for urgent intervention, stating:
“I fear that unless you intervene, I may be killed as threatened by His Excellency and his security team. I further fear that my household, businesses, and other properties in Gombe State may suffer damages as threatened by the Governor.”
He urged the security agencies to protect him against any form of intimidation, harassment, or physical harm, emphasizing that his only offense was his political alignment.
Rising Political Tensions In Gombe
This petition comes amid growing political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections. Modibbo’s defection from the APC to the SDP and his emergence as the Acting State Chairman have evidently unsettled certain power players. This incident raises concerns about the use of state power to suppress political opponents.
So far, Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration has not responded to these allegations.
With the matter now in the hands of the DSS and the Police IGP, political observers are watching closely to see how security agencies will handle this explosive case.
