In a bold move that could reshape military welfare, the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, led by Hon. Abiodun Faleke, has proposed a tax exemption for military personnel in Nigeria.
The recommendation, which aims to ease the financial burden on soldiers, was announced by Faleke on Thursday during a clause-by-clause review of four tax bills sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2024.
“Mr. Speaker, honourable colleagues, the committee has proposed that the personal income of military personnel should be exempted from tax. This is due to the critical nature of their duties,” Faleke declared, drawing resounding approval from fellow lawmakers.
With this proposal, the House acknowledges the sacrifices of Nigerian troops, recognizing their frontline roles in safeguarding the nation. If passed into law, the move will provide much-needed financial relief to military personnel, reinforcing their morale amid ongoing security challenges.
