In a decisive crackdown on violent crime, security forces in Anambra State have raided a notorious hideout used by gunmen and kidnappers, leaving scores feared dead. The joint operation, involving the Nigeria Police Force, the military, and local vigilante groups, was carried out in response to the growing wave of kidnappings and violent attacks in the region.
The raid, which targeted a criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, resulted in the destruction of makeshift structures and the recovery of 19 unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs). According to security sources, the operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle armed syndicates terrorizing residents and travelers in the state.
In a separate action, security operatives also demolished buildings used as kidnappers’ dens in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area. The houses, identified as locations where hostages were kept, were brought down by the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
The latest operation underscores the government’s renewed determination to rid the state of criminal elements. Residents, who have long lived in fear of these armed groups, expressed relief at the bold move by security forces. However, concerns remain over the possibility of retaliatory attacks, as some criminals reportedly escaped during the raid.
While authorities have yet to release an official death toll, eyewitnesses claim that several suspected criminals were neutralized during the operation. The state government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies in reporting suspicious activities.
The crackdown comes amid growing calls for tougher action against banditry and kidnapping in southeastern Nigeria, where armed groups have been operating with increasing audacity. Security analysts believe that sustained operations like this could significantly weaken their grip and restore peace to the region.
